Application and Development of Infrared Thermal Imaging Cameras in Laser Plastic Surgery

time2021/11/29

It is safe and effective to use pulsed infrared thermal imaging cameras to measure skin temperature, and it has a good application in laser plastic surgery. This article will illustrate the relevant experimental process with examples.
The development of medical laser technology has a history of more than 40 years. In the past two decades, it has been widely used in the field of laser cosmetology as a selective light treatment method. The main mechanism of plastic and cosmetic treatment of the face and the whole body is based on the principles and methods of "selective photothermal decomposition", "selective photothermal coagulation", photodynamic therapy, and low-level laser irradiation.

At present, most laser treatment methods will bring different degrees of light and heat effects to the skin and mucous membranes of human lesions at the same time, resulting in a certain degree of thermal damage to the skin and mucous membranes, resulting in various clinical treatment areas.

In the research of exploring the safe dose of individual laser irradiation, people try to find a relatively simple, objective, and non-contact temperature monitoring technology that does not require additional modeling. Studies have found that the use of pulsed infrared thermal imaging cameras for skin temperature measurement is safe and effective. Next, an example of the relevant experimental process will be explained.

Experiment goal

In the clinical application of laser treatment technology and methods, there is a lack of a series of non-invasive real-time temperature measurements and control of the entire lesion area.

This research uses the existing portable infrared thermal imaging camera in the field of environmental science to carry out a series of studies on the temperature measurement and control of the patient’s skin or mucous membrane during laser plastic cosmetic treatment, so as to understand the real-time image of skin tissue heating during various laser treatments.

Hot spot temperature and curve explore the relationship between parameter settings and complications in different types of laser treatments, in order to provide a reference for the definition of safe treatment parameter ranges in the field of laser plastic surgery and cosmetic treatment.

Experimental results

The infrared thermal imager displays and records the thermal image in the pseudo-color state in real-time. The temperature value in the monitoring area of the thermal imager takes the actual area corresponding to a single pixel as the monitoring unit. The thermal imager supporting software with a measurement accuracy of 0.1°C displays the temperature distribution in the form of a histogram ( Figure 1).

It can be observed in the figure that the image intuitively displays the temperature of each pixel in the measurement area in a pseudo-color form, and the color tone changes from cold to warm corresponding to the temperature from low to high.

During the video dynamic recording process, the false color is adjusted in real-time with the temperature changes in the local area of the patient's face, and there is a cross mark to locate the absolute value of the highest temperature and the lowest temperature in the measurement area, accurate to 0.1°C.
Figure 2 The software processes the clinically collected video and picture data, generates a histogram, and visually displays the number of pixels at different temperatures in the measurement area

Conclusion

With the widespread application of laser and photoelectric technology in the field of plastic and cosmetic surgery on the face and the whole body, adverse reactions and complications from improper treatment have occurred from time to time, and they are not uncommon in clinical practice.

The use of "selective photothermal decomposition", "selective photothermal coagulation" and other principles for laser plastic cosmetic treatments are processes that use the target color base to absorb laser energy to produce physical and chemical changes and produce a series of biochemical reactions.

Therefore, the inaccurate dosage during treatment and transient increase in skin photosensitivity may cause excessive heat release to the surrounding tissues of the target color base, causing adverse skin reactions, and complications in severe cases.

The infrared thermal imager used in the research in this article is easy to use and has good imaging effects. The instantaneous changes in skin temperature can be observed intuitively during measurement. The instrument uses a pseudo-color display, and the color conversion is sensitive, which brings great convenience to the subsequent recording and processing of data.

At present, the related research using infrared thermal imager has obtained a large number of skin temperature data of clinical laser plastic cosmetic treatment, and it is still being improved, which will lay the foundation for further research and the establishment of personalized treatment plans.
