3 Crucial Indicators of Infrared Thermal Imaging Cameras

time2021/08/25

If you want the infrared camera to obtain high-precision measurement data, you must choose according to its performance indicators. This article will specifically introduce the three key indicators of thermal imaging cameras.
How does the infrared thermal imaging camera detect water leakage in the floor heating?

Infrared thermal imaging  is a non-contact technology that can measure the infrared wavelengths emitted from an object, and then convert the temperature information into a thermal image. In detection, a hot spot or temperature increase usually indicates a problem or potential failure. In the process of choosing a thermal imaging camera, the following three key indicators are particularly important.

Temperature range

When choosing a thermal imaging camera, please evaluate the temperature range that suits your application. For industrial applications, the temperature range is the first specification to consider. Industrial thermal imaging cameras have a wider temperature range and can accommodate facilities with high-temperature equipment, such as boilers and steam systems.

Thermal sensitivity (NETD)

In the presence of circuit noise, the thermal sensitivity or equivalent noise temperature difference (NETD) of the infrared camera can detect very small temperature differences. Cameras with low NETD can also provide higher resolution images with higher accuracy, measured in millikelvin (mk). For example, the thermal sensitivity of a camera with 50 mk is approximately 4 times that of a camera with 200 mk. A camera with a higher thermal sensitivity (50 mk) can provide a greater temperature difference, thereby displaying more colors on the thermal display.

Resolution

The resolution of the detector plays a vital role in the image quality of the thermal imaging camera. The higher resolution allows accurate and reliable measurement of smaller targets from a greater distance, thereby creating a clearer thermal image. The higher the detector resolution, the more accurate the camera.

When evaluating between the detector resolution and the display resolution, please note that the quality of the thermal image and its data is always determined by the detector resolution. For example, if the resolution of the built-in screen is 307,200 pixels (640 x 480) and the resolution of the heat detector is only 19,200 pixels (160 x 120), the thermal image can only be measured by the resolution of the heat detector.
